The 2017 Australian Rogaining Championships will be held on 6-7 May 2017 in some fantastic country between Canberra and Cooma and hosted by the ACT Rogaining Association. The course will be set by the very experienced team of Ron Simpson and Jeannie Douglass who have set a number of recent ACT championship courses and won mixed superveteran titles at World and Australian championships. There will be excellent navigational challenges in open eucalypt forest. You might even spot a koala on the course!
Most of the course area is on private property with the very kind permission of some ten landowners. The area has never been farmed and retains its native bush cover. Remains from gold mining activity will make the Victorians feel at home. One large block is managed specifically for its conservation values including koala habitat. Apart from this being mostly private property, the embargoed area is defined by the Bredbo River, Peak View road, Numeralla River and the Monaro Highway.
May typically provides superb clear days with cool evenings. The Hash House will offer plenty of free camping area from Friday to Monday. There are caravan parks and motel accommodation in Cooma about 25 minutes drive. If you are quick, the Bredbo pub also has accommodation.
Approximate driving times to the Hash House: 1 hour from Canberra, 4.5 hours from Sydney, and 8 hours from Melbourne. There will be a bus running from Canberra to the event to pick up interstate travellers as well as ACT rogainers (sensibly) not driving.
